Understanding Ovulation

How Does Ovulation Work?

Ovulation is the process where a mature egg is released from one of your ovaries. This typically happens once per menstrual cycle. In the days leading up to ovulation, rising estrogen levels trigger a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH). This LH surge causes the dominant follicle in the ovary to rupture and release an egg into the fallopian tube. The released egg survives for about 12 to 24 hours. If sperm are present in the fallopian tube during this time, fertilization can occur. If the egg is not fertilized, it dissolves and is shed along with the uterine lining during your next period. Ovulation generally occurs about 14 days before your next period starts, regardless of your total cycle length.

Signs and Symptoms of Ovulation

Your body provides several signals around ovulation: • Cervical mucus changes — As ovulation approaches, cervical mucus becomes clear, stretchy, and slippery, resembling raw egg whites. This 'fertile-quality' mucus helps sperm travel to the egg. • Basal body temperature (BBT) rise — After ovulation, your resting temperature increases by about 0.2-0.5°C (0.4-1°F) and stays elevated until your next period. • Mittelschmerz (ovulation pain) — Some women feel a mild, one-sided lower abdominal ache or twinge when the egg is released. • Increased libido — Many women experience heightened sexual desire around ovulation. • Breast tenderness — Hormonal changes may cause mild breast sensitivity. Cyla can track all these symptoms and correlate them with your cycle for more accurate ovulation detection.

Timing and Fertility

Your fertile window spans approximately six days: the five days before ovulation and ovulation day itself. This is because sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, while the egg lives for only 12 to 24 hours after release. The highest chance of conception occurs on the two days before ovulation and on ovulation day itself. Having intercourse every one to two days during the fertile window maximizes the chances of conception. If you are trying to avoid pregnancy, you should abstain from unprotected intercourse during the entire fertile window. Note that this calculator provides estimates — for reliable contraception, consult your healthcare provider about appropriate methods.
